With poser 'designer series' headphones flooding the market for kids to spend their dollars on, I have found incredible performance and comfort in the ATH-M40fs studiophones. Whether plugged into our band's mixing board, into my stereo, my laptop or my smartphone, the sound reproduction excels, and compares to no other. Whether listening to a live mix from our 7 piece MoTown band, screaming trumpets in a big band recording, pipe organ compositions, barbershop quartets and chorus', or more modern selections, every last bit of every sound is brought to my attention. Even some selections that I have listened to several times prior reveal nuances previously missed by other headphones. I do highly recommend these superb quality studiophones as a smart purchase over others costing two or three times more! They are solidly built, and you can count on them to provide better sound than most anything else available. Sincerely, Andy Platz trumpet player for The Swizzle Stick Band, Akron Ohio.
Muddy Sound I am only an part-time amateur musician so take this with a grain of salt. These headphones sound very muddy to me. The bass seems to get more recognition that the trebles. I am only an part-time amateur musician so take this with a grain of salt.
These headphones sound very muddy to me. The bass seems to get more recognition that the trebles.
The headphones I got don't seem to be very good for acoustic guitar or harp listening. I got some Radio Shack Optimus Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHF) headphones 10 years ago for only $50 that I have liked much better than these. I bought these because my the 1/4 inch jack on my RRHF phones was loose and my wife was barking at me because it was taking me too long to properly re-solder the connection. If you want a reference to the kind of sound I like, I tend to like the MXL 991 pencil mic that some people complain as being to twangy. Yes, I know the 991 boosts the treble, maybe I just don't like flat. Maybe I just need to try some EQ out and shut up. Anyway, I don't have a reference mic laying around to really test these phones so I am just wondering about their FLAT response claim.
Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: I sweetended for years in LA studios. I know my cans. These are not $3500 cans and don't pretend to be. Highs are crisp and clean, full range of nuance through out. Mids are nice and tight, the lowend hangs where it should be. If you like big fat go deaf bass, you won't like these.
Straight ahead features, no bells and whistles to hide behind. Not the highest, not the lowest. Good quality over all.
Better than most in the price range. Value, I don't think you can find better for the money. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: PLEASE READ!!! I've seen several reviews that only gave a 1 star rating, yet their review talked about how much they loved these headphones. In case you don't know; a 5 star rating is better than a 1 star. When you give a 5 start rating your saying the product is great, just as a 1 star means you don't like it at all.

Having said that, I gave these a 4 star simply due to needing more on the bass end. Other than that, it is a very good set of headphones, at a good price. Mine are used in mixing, or any other need for headphones while in my small studio. I've found that they work well with vocals while being recorded. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: I needed strong cans which could take a beating. The cable is thicker and more sturdy going to 1/4'.
They are well-built as standard design goes, yet have more weight than most brands in the higher price range. Their asset other than material strength is in flat sound response for monitoring. The signal is not colored and tighter in the high-end, mid-range is stable as well, bass definition is standard if not lacking. Good for monitoring rock, vocals, drums and guitars. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: i am a big music freak and since my computer is in my dining room often times i can't listen to my music using my actual speakers.
These headphones are great. So far, i have had no problems. The audio sounds great and captures all ranges really well. The cable has a generous amount of length so i can go to the far end of my desk without removing my headphones which is a plus for me. One reminder if you are looking to get these is that they are using a 1/4 inch connector so if you want to use them for your computer or ipod(which is not what they were meant for being studio headphones) then you will need to get an adapter.
Luckily adapters are cheap and easily findable at radioshack or online. Also be sure to check that you have a 1/4 inch port on your computer because that is not common on generic computers and you might need to get a sound card that supports it. For me i use the audigy sound blaster 2zs.
My only complaint is that they are uncomfortable for extended periods of time but that might just be me since i often wear them for a few hours on end. In the end these are definitely a good buy if you enjoy listening to high-quality music on your computer or in a studio. One last reminder is that these are NOT casual listening headphones.
They are studio headphones meaning that they aren't notably portable and rugged, they are for people who sit down at a computer. So don't use these in the rain while you are at a sports game or something! If you want something that is a little more suited for traveling around then use the audiotechnica ath m35's because those fold and have a 3.5 mm adapter for ipods as well as good studio funcion too.
Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: SAFE UP AND GET A BETTER SET OF CANS. These are heavy duty and super comfy but the 'upper mids' are so spiked and 'honky' these are just annoying and wish someone would of pointed this out earlier(haven't read reviews reciently so maybe someone has). If you are going to EQ these for just 'itunes and spotify' then they are good for the money. Otherwise look elsewhere.
They are annoying for any serious studio work. I got these for use with mixing and creating POD tones for guitar and unfortunately I have found my KOSS inears do the job much better at a lower price. SAFE UP A BIT MORE AND GET A BETTER CAN SET!!!!! Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: My hearing has been bad all of my life. Now it is 80 db down in my left ear and 108 db down in my right.

So I've gone through a bunch of headphones over the years. Bought these two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I'm hearing words in the music that I never heard before.
I can use these with my guitar amps. I play guitar, not well, but some. Now I can hear myself play better than with the other cans I have used.I am very very happy with these. I am afraid to let my wife or kids hear these because they will all want a set.
For now I am only sharing this story with you. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: I got the ATH-M40fs Audio Technica headphones today, three business days after they were ordered.
Went right up to the studio, put them on to some Michael Buble, trying them out with a track featuring a big band. When I first listened I thought they might be a touch dull. I immediately compared them to the Sony 7506's that I have used faithfully for thirteen years. I never fully realized that the Sony's have a jazzed up high end and the bottom is a trifle contoured. The result is that while the Sony's are great for listening, are pretty light, and handle high SPLs well they have never been ideal for tracking. For mixing, you're doing guess work.
Like the Koss Pro4a's before them they employ a 40mm driver. That's like putting a car stereo speaker on your head. After a three hour break I put the ATs back on and listened to three very musical cuts without a break. And guess what? They're excellent. It's like having a pair of monitors taped to your ears. They are very comfortable, have ideal separation, and are smooth with an unhyped but very present bass.
What makes them so useful is that they have better mid range than most of their competitors. In a nutshell: very, very accurate. And the ATH-M40fs's also use a 40mm driver and put out big time SPLs without a whimper.
I'm interested to see how they do while tracking. I was helped by the reviews on these and also by a favor that Audio Technica did for me.
It so happens that their AT-4033a is my favorite large diaphragm condenser microphone. I have been recording my voice through one for many years. A few months ago the shock mount for a 4033 of mine came undone and I discovered that replacing it was very expensive. So I sent mine back Audio Technica after talking to customer service, expecting to pay for a replacement or a repair (a newly tied basket on my hardware). I received the shockmount back in ten days, no questions asked, retied, looking brand new.
So, when I needed new cans. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: In the price range that straddles the line between upper-end consumer and the beginnings of 'pro-sumer' & professional, I had tried all of the usual suspects and found the Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Headphones easily the most balanced sonically with the best fidelity among all the big-name brands at this price-point (and even above to a degree).
After a short 'breaking-in' period for the drivers, you have a strong but tight as opposed to 'boomy' low-end, a complex midrange that brings out parts you've never heard in recordings that you've listened to for years, and a sweet but not piercing high-end. There's no fatigue with these headphones - you can use them for hours on end in the studio, in practicing an instrument through an amplifier's 'Headphone Output' (which I often do late at night as a Bassist, which should help prove their low-and-midrange response), or using them to listen to music for pleasure. When I had first received my set my Significant Other, who had never used headphones at this level, was so taken with them and how they had increased the sound quality of both CD & vinyl recordings but also the output of iPod and iTunes-stored material (which, as a semi-professional musician I had encoded at a much-better-than-average bitrate. Codec, and type of audio file) to which she said 'I never thought that 'ripped' material could sound so close to CD-quality!' After a few weeks of wanting to use my headphones for playing bass only to find her using them while working on her Masters (and later her Doctorate) I broke down and purchased a set for her so there would be no 'fighting' over who gets to use them.An added bonus is the User Serviceability of the headphones, namely the drivers, cables, and earpads.
After several years of hard usage and sweat of living in the South the earpads began to flake off their outer coating to reveal the foam underneath - nothing that changes the sound quality but does leave bits of black material on your clothes and in your ears. I called Audio-Technica to ask how much a replacement set of pad would cost. The employee on the phone simply asked for my address and 2 days later (I'm lucky to live all of 15 minutes away from their US offices) I received a set of brand new earpads in the mail. The same for a new cable several years later when one of our cats thought it was a plaything and decided to make it her new chew-toy.
It was then that I decided that I'd be giving this company my business unless reason showed me otherwise. After 8 years, 3 headphones (One set are still going strong, the first set purchased as well until recently bring crushed in a tripping from said cat, which gave me a reason to upgrade to the ATH-M50 model for a negligible increase in cost) I've had nothing but great experiences with Audio-Technica and their products and give them the highest praise. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: We have eight of these phones in the studio for tracking and two sets of ATH D-40fs for tracking drums. The M40fs' do not give an exaggerated top or bottom boost, giving a mirror image of what's going in, which is what professionals prefer in recording; I'm not exactly sure why some of the complaints were a poor bass end, if you want a bassy-sounding phone go with an overly-coloured dr beats! However if you prefer to know exactly what's going to track, then these are your choice. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: I had used these at a church several times, and those uses made me want to get a pair. Good around-the-ear comfort, and they do a good job at blocking out extraneous sounds.
I bought these primarily for use as monitors while playing bass or drums, and for that, they function very well. I also frequently use them for mixing. Now for the best part of these: The frequency response is truly flat which gives you a real feel for how the music sounds (or is supposed to). Some comments refer to these phones as lacking low-end or mid response. The units those people are used to hearing likely have a low-end boost; most people enjoy that sound, and a lot of 'studio' phones have that 'feature'. And, these will sound thin in comparison. There's no curve in the frequency response.
If you like music muddy or boomy, with huge, fat bass, these are not for you. If clarity is your bag, hearing music the way it's supposed to sound, this is a great unit for the price.
Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: I bought a pair of these 13 years ago to use in my studio. I still use them everyday for all my remixes and other studio work. They sound better than other headphones I've tried (and I've tried and owned many brands such as AKG, Sony, Behringer, Numark, Gemini etc.). None sound nearly as good as these do. They are extremely accurate, have a nice well balanced sound to them and are very comfortable and very reliable for those long studio sessions. They sound great with any type of music.
One of the best purchases I ever made for my studio. Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones: I was unable to properly treat my room or purchase really good reference monitors, so I did the next best thing: I got some mixing headphones. Now, most audio snobs will tell you that you 'shouldn't' mix with phones, but I have to tell you, I posted some of my mixes on the Cakewalk forum and no one said anything bad about them. I just wrapped my first CD in a number of years and sent it off to mastering.
They didn't think there were any glaring issues either. So, if you live in a perfect world: treat your room and get a 2nd mortgage on your house so you can afford some decent monitors, otherwise, get these.
